A new platform launches to aid furniture retail

A new UK platform is making the industry’s most under-told sustainability story into a revenue one.

There’s a question every furniture retailer has fielded for the past decade. A customer, standing in the showroom, on the verge of a £1,400 sofa purchase, asks:

“What do I do with my old one?”

The honest answer hasn’t changed in years. Pay the council for a bulky-waste collection. Or pay the retailer to take it to the incinerator. Either way, a perfectly viable piece of furniture goes up in smoke.

The retailer captures nothing from the disposal. The customer leaves with a small regret. Multiply by the millions of UK furniture transactions every year and you get the unwritten sustainability scandal nobody quite gets around to writing about.

The UK landfills approximately 670,000 tonnes of furniture annually. The recycling rate sits at 17%.

That’s not just an environmental story. It’s a revenue story.

A new UK platform called Repurch has launched, betting that this is the single biggest captureable opportunity in furniture retail right now — and that retailers who treat resale as a sustainability programme are still missing the point.

Repurch is trade-in and clearance infrastructure for furniture brands. A customer trades in their old sofa via the retailer’s own branded portal. Repurch handles everything operational from there — free collection from the home, anti-scam validation, sale, escrow, two-man nationwide delivery to the new owner. The retailer never funds a credit that doesn’t materialise.

It runs on the back of the Sofalistic Marketplace — a UK consumer resale platform live since 2024. By founders’ design, the demand engine was built first. The buyers are already there.

The platform projects an annual revenue uplift in the eight figures for a typical enterprise furniture retailer — driven not by margin on the second-hand sale, but by what happens next in the showroom. A reframe most of the industry hasn’t yet made.

“This isn’t about being first,” says Marc Downer, Co-Founder of Repurch. “It’s about being right about where the value sits. There’s a 12-18 month leadership window where being known for credible, branded trade-in is a brand differentiator. After that, it becomes table stakes. The retailers acting now will be referenced when their competitors catch up.”

Repurch is in a number of commercial discussions with leading UK furniture retailers. Visit repurch.com or email partnerships@repurch.com for more information.
