British sofa and chair manufacturer West Midlands Upholstery has been manufacturing quality upholstery for 22 years, and whilst much has changed within the furniture industry during that time, one thing has remained constant – its commitment to craftsmanship, quality and honesty.
West Midlands Upholstery, which is run by husband-and-wife team, Steve & Alison Whitehouse, manufactures in the heart of The Black Country, a historic region of the West Midlands famed for its industrial heritage, skilled trades and manufacturing excellence.
During the Industrial Revolution, the area became one of Britain’s most important manufacturing centres, known for coal mining, ironworks, foundries and engineering. The name “Black Country” is believed to have originated from the thick coal seams and smoke that once covered the landscape during the height of industry. Generations of craftsmen and manufacturers built their reputations here on hard work, skill and reliability – values that continue to shape West Midlands Upholstery today.
“We believe that good furniture starts with good foundations,” Alison said. “This is why we manufacture everything from the frame upwards entirely in-house. By controlling every stage of production ourselves, we can maintain close attention to detail and ensure consistent quality throughout the manufacturing process. In an age where outsourcing and mass production have become increasingly common, we continue to value the hands-on approach.
“We are not a volume-driven manufacturer producing hundreds of rushed pieces each week. Instead, we operate with a loyal and experienced team of skilled craftsmen and women who take genuine pride in their work. Every sofa and chair that leaves our factory has been carefully handcrafted with time, care and experience behind it.

“Of course, this approach does mean that our lead times are not seven days. Typically, our production times are around five to seven weeks. However, many retailers are finding that customers are willing to wait a little longer for something that has been well made and meets their needs. Fast furniture may satisfy short-term demand, but quality, comfort and durability are what create repeat business and long-term customer trust.”
West Midlands Upholstery has recently expanded its range through Buxton and Palma, with both already being very well received by retailers looking for fresh, commercial designs with strong showroom appeal. “Alongside these newer models, our Riviera continues to perform well, offering a timeless look with a modern washable fabric that customers respond positively to,” Alison revealed.
“Equally successful is our Camden, which has become a reliable seller. It’s supplied on an L shaped wooden foot with a choice of colours and has a hidden castor behind the foot for easy moveability. Another good performer for us has been our Malvern model. There are some interesting choices within the fabric collection, which enables retailers to offer a varied choice.”
The business offers any fabric on any model which gives the retailer even more choice to pass onto customers. A current standout performer is its Henley model, which is “outperforming everything” at the moment and is one that is recommended to new retailers who are looking to trial a model.
“Ultimately, selecting the right models for your showroom should never be a random process,” Alison adds. “Every retailer serves a different customer base, and understanding what works best in your area is essential. That is why we always encourage retailers to simply pick up the phone and have a conversation with us. With over two decades of manufacturing experience, we are always happy to offer honest guidance and help retailers choose the right products for their business and their customers.”
