British family-run manufacturer of handcrafted iron and brass beds and natural mattresses, Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company, has started 2026 with intent.
Founded by Amanda Oldfield – winner of the Made in Britain Award – Inspiring Leader of the Year 2025 back in November, the Norfolk-based business, which is a Royal Warrant holder and the only UK metal bed maker certified by Made in Britain, has recently launched a new pure wool-inspired mattress collection as well as earmarking plans to expand its facility.
Nestled on the Sandringham Estate in Wolferton, the company implements traditional techniques and British-sourced materials wherever possible through its production process. Always looking to evolve, the business is currently investing in an expansion of its workshop facilities, as Amanda explains: “This includes introducing new manufacturing techniques and bringing more processes in-house, including wool scouring.
“By doing so, we gain greater control over quality, traceability and efficiency, while also strengthening our British supply chain. These investments support our long-term commitment to craftsmanship rather than short-term output.”

In fact, the Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Co. was recognised as a finalist in the 2025 Innovation in Wool Awards, placing fourth from seven shortlisted companies and more than 30 applications nationwide. The last 12-months has seen the business receive rave reviews and prestige recognition as already mentioned, but for Amanda, the importance of resilience and diversification were particular highlights.
“It has reinforced our decision to expand existing projects, particularly our wool cooperative and our commitment to increasing the amount of British wool we source directly from farmers. Those initiatives feel more important than ever and give us confidence in the long-term direction of the business.”
One such direction has led to the launch of a new collection, encompassing British wool at its heart. “We have recently launched our Signature British Wool Mattress Collection,” Amanda revealed. “It is the first pure wool pocket sprung mattress range to be certified as Made in Britain. The collection is made entirely under one roof using hand-teased British wool and calico pocket springs, with no foam or synthetic fillings. It reflects our focus on natural materials, transparency, and long-term comfort.”
The collection focuses on how a mattress should feel over time, not just on first impression. Hand-teased wool forms the comfort layers, allowing fibres to remain open and responsive. This creates a sleeping surface that regulates temperature naturally and supports rest without heaviness. Wool’s ability to absorb and release moisture also helps maintain a fresh, balanced sleeping environment throughout the year.

Calico pocket springs, also made in Britain, sit beneath the wool. Replacing the synthetic pockets commonly used in modern mattresses. Encased in natural cotton, each spring moves independently, improving airflow and reducing disturbance from movement. This structure also ages more gracefully, making it particularly suited to natural fillings.
Wool is sourced directly from British sheep farmers and remains traceable throughout production. Every mattress is signed by the lead artisan and backed by a 20-year guarantee, reflecting a commitment to durability and long-term value.
The Signature Collection is offered in three designs, scaled by overall support rather than soft, medium, or firm labels. Customers are encouraged to choose spring tension based on their own comfort rather than relying on fixed definitions. This approach reflects a belief that comfort cannot be standardised and is best understood through experience.
“We’ve never believed that comfort can be reduced to a single word,” continues Amanda. “Two people can lie on the same mattress and experience it completely differently. Our role is to build something honest and adaptable, using materials that work with the body rather than against it.

“We are very different from many bedmakers. We are not about mass production; we focus on quality, longevity and responsible making. This year, we are also looking to grow our hospitality partnerships, increasing the number of boutique hotels across the country using our beds. At the same time, we aim to expand our retailer network, working with partners who share our values.”
The company has already made progress in its retail expansion, partnering with Feather & Black. “We are very excited to be partnering with Feather & Black on an exclusive collection of bed frames, which is due to launch this month,” Amanda added.
“Alongside this, we will continue to develop our wool initiatives and invest further in British manufacturing capabilities. Please do get in touch to find out more about becoming a partner with the Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company.”
