Southons of Salisbury to close due to retirement

Southons of Salisbury, as a family‑run home furniture business since 1907, is one of Salisbury’s oldest retailers and indeed part of the local landscape. Now, they are finally closing their doors forever due to retirement.

The original Salisbury store began trading in 1907 and was located on the corner of Dews Road and Fisherton Street. In 1924 Southons occupied part of the Catherine Street site, which was then extended and renovated in the late 1960’s.

Chris Southon, Managing Director commented: “After nearly 120 years and the involvement of three generations of my family, this a very sad announcement to have to make. However, with no succession and the increasing commercial pressures under which we are now operating, we have reluctantly concluded that this is the right time to bring down the curtain on our illustrious history.”

The store will meet all its obligations to staff, customers and suppliers. “We are proud of our long and successful relationship with Salisbury and will continue to offer the best service to customers right to the very end,” said Mr Southon.

The Catherine Street store, which sells many famous brands of high-quality furniture and beds, will shortly launch a Closing Down Sale and sell off displays and stock over the coming weeks. The Closing Down Sale will open to the general public on Friday 8 May 2026.

Southons would like to “thank its dedicated staff, past and present, the suppliers and manufacturers it has worked with over the years as well as the many loyal customers who have supported the business over the decades”.
