TFR Group: Turning Mattress Returns into Revenue

The Furniture Recycling Group (TFR Group) is leading the charge in the circular economy by diverting 100% of mattresses from landfill in the UK.

Through innovative mattress recycling and rejuvenation services, TFR Group is helping retailers protect profits, reduce waste, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

At the heart of this mission is the company’s Rejuvenation Service, designed to transform mattress returns into valuable, saleable assets. “We offer a high rejuvenation rate for mattress retailers handling comfort guarantee returns,” explains Nick Ottinger, CEO at TFR Group. “This helps retailers protect asset value, recover revenue from returns, and provides a full and transparent audit trail.”

The process covers not just mattresses but also ancillary items such as pillows, duvets, weighted blankets, and mattress toppers—all of which can be cleaned, rejuvenated, and repackaged for resale. Currently, TFR Group processes around 2,000 mattresses per week with a 70–80% pass rate, thanks to its bespoke sanitisation and R&D-led innovations.

Each mattress is handled with meticulous care. Upon arrival, it undergoes a robust, auditable quality assurance process, complete with photographic data capture accessible to clients through a secure online portal. Those that pass are fully sanitised using TFR Group’s three-stage sanitisation system, ensuring 100% of the surface area is cleansed. Mattresses with removable covers are washed separately, and all units are repackaged, relabelled, and palletised ready to be sent back to the customer back for resale

Failed items aren’t wasted either—they are recycled or repaired to increase pass rates where possible. With less than 1.1% consumer complaints and 100% data capture, TFR Group delivers transparency and reliability to every client.

As Nick highlights, the benefits go beyond cost recovery. “We’ve developed the ability to resize removable cover mattresses to match the sales profiles of rejuvenated mattresses,” he explains. This flexibility has contributed to an “excellent year of growth,” reflecting the rising acceptance of high-quality, reused mattresses.

At a time when affordability and sustainability are more important than ever, TFR Group’s Rejuvenation Service provides a win-win solution—reducing landfill waste, helping retailers unlock new revenue streams from returns, and supporting their customers with access to affordable, rejuvenated mattresses during the ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
