Experts boost engagement

Sleep retailer Mattress Online recently announced the appointment of Chester Maglo as its new Sleep and Performance Coach. We caught up with the business to find out more.

Officially joining back in May 2026, Chester Maglo, a respected professional in the fields of clinical sleep science and physical performance, joins Mattress Online’s expert panel to provide unique content that will focus on high-quality sleep and its links to the physical and mental science of rest.

The aim is to help more customers maximise sleep for better daily health, improved energy and athletic recovery, guided through Chester’s background, who holds an academic foundation in Sport, Exercise and Health Science, as well as now being a Year 2 Respiratory and Sleep Scientist – as part of an NHS Scientist Training Programme.

Chester has also dedicated years to analysing the effects that sleep deprivation and poor rest have on performance, both inside and outside of the gym, and how sleep directly influences cognitive function, emotional well-being and physical output.

As part of his role, Chester will be contributing regular evidence-based articles, debunking sleep myths and sharing sleep & performance recommendations across Mattress Online’s digital platforms. So, how has the move been so far?

“Our key reason for wanting to work with Chester was his approach to sleep and sleep challenges,” says Steve Adams, CEO at Mattress Online. “He’s pragmatic, straight to the point and he isn’t afraid to call out misinformation or dogmatic advice and opinions that are being shared widely across the media.

“Equally, he’s got a scientific background working in the NHS, he works with clients as a performance coach. Importantly, Chester has lived experience of the detrimental effects of sleep having been diagnosed with sleep apnoea himself and is a user of CPAP therapy.

“Chester has become part of the team really quickly; and has a lot he wants to talk about; we’re excited he’s joined us. It’s fairly early days but engagement has already been positive related to the content Chester writes for us; and we’ve also seen interest externally through PR and social media.

“We have lots more planned this year with the panel, which also includes US-based Sleep Science Coach and CBT-I Expert, Dr Kimberly Lemke, as a guest contributor.”

With Mattress Online’s panel in mind, Steve highlighted the importance of who they work with and why they matter to the business and wider community. “We know that fake or unsubstantiated expertise has been the subject of scrutiny in recent times. Much of this has been due to the creation of AI personalities with fabricated CV’s – but sadly also through upsetting revelations concerning dangerous sleep advice for babies.

“For Mattress Online, as a brand, it’s important to be recognised as using credible sources of expertise when we relay advice to our customers and general public. There are elements of competence-washing in our industry that we disagree with… “fake it ‘till you make it” shouldn’t be a thing when it comes to health advice around sleep. We work with respected, qualified and experienced experts whose backgrounds fit the title.”

Mattress Online’s panel has evolved over the years, which is now driven by Hannah Shore, Head of Sleep Science at the company. Through her, and the panel, the business is privy to a constant source of sleep advice and information, product insights and industry updates.

“When we get the panel together on a regular basis, and speak to them individually, we’re always learning more about how much crossover there is between sleep, relationships, nutrition, exercise etc,” continues Steve. “Our email open rates tell us a fascinating story too about advice pieces we share with our customers – the data doesn’t lie.”

That data can help translate into sales too, with the business “performing well”, particularly in hybrid and memory foam products. “It’s going well, lots of changes to the online landscape are keeping us engaged, and the rise of AI search and the zero-click world is firmly on our radars,” Steve said.

“We’re seeing a trend up on both hybrid and memory foam mattresses; and the overall attachment rate for pillows increasing. We’re also about to hit a significant milestone as part of our charitable working with the Combined Authority Safe Space to Sleep programme here in South Yorkshire, which we’ll share in due course.

“That for us is an investment to be supporting families and children with beds and cots of their own, and helping build a foundation for sleep during childhood. We’ve also delivered bespoke retail sales training to our store teams and will continue to use the data we collect through our panel of experts as a helpful insight and guide.”

With just a few short months under his belt, Chester remains focused on the task in hand, while excited at the opportunity to empower people with sleep advice. “Sleep is one of the most important foundations when it comes to performance, yet it is often the first thing people sacrifice as part of a busy lifestyle,” Chester said.

“Whether you are an athlete training for elite-level physical output or a business owner managing the demands of daily life, the quality of your sleep heavily influences your recovery, mood, and health. It’s been a great few months since joining Mattress Online and I’m looking forward to help empower more people with knowledge and tools that can lead to truly restorative rest.”
