Northallerton-based independent department store retailer Barkers has reported a growth in sales.
According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 January 2026, total sales rose 5.3% to £22.5m from £21.4m in 2025.
Pre-tax profit resulted at £1.2m, just down from £1.5m recorded the previous year.
Stated within its report, Barkers said: “Gross margin was 48%, above the prior year’s 47.5%, reflecting continued focus on margin management across all departments. Operating profit for the year was £1m, down from £1.2m in the prior year, principally due to significant investment in property repairs and maintenance during the year.
“This included the replacement of both the Barkers Arcade roof and the Home Store atrium, together with a new roof on the original part of the Home Store and the refurbishment of the High Street store lingerie department. These investments have enhanced the customer experience, protected key trading assets and helped maintain the high standards expected across all areas of the business.
“The business delivered strong sales growth across its retail and hospitality operations, with growth achieved across both stores, as well as in our restaurants and café operations. The improvement in gross margin demonstrates the effectiveness of ongoing margin management initiatives and careful control of stock purchasing.
“Inflationary pressures, particularly in relation to wages, employer costs and other operating expenses, have continued to impact the wider retail sector. The directors remain pleased with the resilience of the company’s trading performance and are confident in the long-term outlook for the business.”
